Job Title: Senior Researcher

Working For: Margaret Mitchell MSP (Central Scotland)

Location: The Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh

Salary: In line with Scottish Parliament payscales

Job Details

This is a full-time position in the parliamentary office of Margaret Mitchell MSP. The job title is for a Senior Researcher but the role also includes running the parliamentary office and occasional travel to the regional office in Hamilton.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research for parliamentary business and constituents’ issues
  • Drafting and researching amendments to legislation
  • Researching and drafting speeches for use in the chamber and at events
  • Drafting and lodging parliamentary questions and motion
  • Maintaining up to date knowledge on relevant portfolio areas
  • Running the Parliament Office, including managing the diary, members’ expenses and maintaining an accurate and up to date filing system, physical and electronic
  • Organising meetings, preparation of notes for meetings, preparing briefings, taking minutes
  • Drafting and sending letters, emails & documents to constituents and stakeholders
  • Submitting Freedom of Information requests and collating response
  • Answering phone calls and queries from constituents and stakeholders
  • Assist and oversee the work of other team members as required

Essential skills:

  • Ability to work calmly in a high pressure environment and to tight deadlines
  • Exceptional organisational skills & eye for detail
  • Excellent telephone manner and written communication skills, with confidence interacting with people at all levels
  • A trustworthy & discreet manner ensuring that the highest standards of confidentiality are upheld
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a busy team as well as on your own initiative independently
  • Strong IT skills; competence in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel)

Desirable skills:

  • A legal background or law degree would be particularly appropriate
  • A working knowledge of parliamentary procedures
  • A knowledge of the Central Scotland region and local issues

Closing Date is Friday 21 September at Midday. Interviews will take place on Monday 24th September in Edinburgh, Start Date is Monday 8th October (or as soon as possible thereafter depending on notice periods)
